6. Campanile

Looking eastwards from Market Square, between Kwantu Towers and Traduna buildings, one catches a glimpse of the Campanile beyond the elevated freeway.

To gain access to it one must cross the Square, walk down the steps by the City Hall and turn left into Fleming Street. The Campanile is a 51.8- meter high brick structure with a spiral staircase of 204 steps leading to a viewing platform. It houses a carillon of 23 bells and was completed in 1923 to commemorate the centenary of the landing of the 1820 Settlers (NM 1989). The tower is sited just to the north of the spot where 4000 British Settlers arrived.
