Located to the north of the Campanile, this solid looking building has existed since 1875 when a railway line was constructed to Uitenhage, about 40 kilometres away. The line was later extended to Graaff-Reinet (the Midland Railway) and a branch line (the North-Eastern Railway) from Swartkops to Cradock. Eventually both lines were connected to the national system. Designed by James Bisset, Resident Engineer, Harbour and Public Works, the original double-storeyed station building still exists. It is one of the oldest stations surviving in South Africa. The vaulted roof over the platforms, the single-storey Parcels Office on the corner and the block facing Strand Street were added in 1890, the latter receiving its third floor in 1898. These additions were designed by G J Sherwood.  The South African Transport Services renovated the station in 1985.
